Believing Beyond Circumstances

Jairus miracle, secret God Podcast, believing beyond your reality, Mark 5:21-43

Did You Know?

Mark chapter five says “A leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet, pleading fervently with Him, ‘My little daughter is dying.’ He said, ‘Please come and lay your hands on her. Heal her so she can live.’ So they set off to Jairus’ house to heal his daughter.”

On the way there, a huge crowd was following them. This is where we find the story of the woman with the issue of blood who touched Jesus’s garment and was healed.

Don’t Bother, It’s Too Late

While Jesus was still talking to this woman, someone came from Jairus’ home. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.” Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just believe, and she will be healed.” When they came to the home where the child was sick, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead. She’s only asleep.” The crowd laughed at Him, but He made them all leave, and He took the girl’s father, mother, and His three disciples into the room where the girl was lying.

So often God is doing something in our life. He sends His word, we listen and we believe. We are walking towards that word, that promise, that goal with God. We are on our way somewhere with Him. But then along the way, some voice comes along, some report, some information, and it throws us for a loop, it may even be true. Suddenly, we’re confronted with facts that seem to contradict everything we’ve been hoping for. In reality, the girl was most likely dead; at least, what they knew of being dead, she fit the bill. The report comes, and the voices say, “Don’t bother. She’s dead. Stop wasting Jesus’ time. Just accept it. What you thought would happen, won’t. You missed it. Sorry. Just move on.”

So Much NOISE

Even though Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t worry, she’s not dead.” Jairus still heard those negative words. They probably directly hit his heart. And even though Jesus is there saying it’s okay, there is a huge crowd weeping and wailing and carrying on, further solidifying the report that she is dead. It’s hard not to notice the crowd. It’s hard not to notice the facts. It’s hard not to notice the reality in front of us being backed up by the noise and commotion. We say to ourselves, “Oh, I guess I misunderstood, or I got it wrong. Maybe Jesus isn’t going to heal my daughter. I guess it’s too late, I missed my miracle, I should just face the facts.” Jesus was asking Jairus to believe beyond circumstances, trusting His word over the apparent reality.

Here’s a desperate father on his way to bring his sick daughter the help she needs. They’re already late because they unexpectedly stopped to heal the woman with the issue of blood, so he is extra stressed I’m sure. Every second counts; he needs to get there. And then here comes people from his own house. “Don’t bother”, they say. “She’s dead. It’s too late.” But Jesus was unfazed by those words, for He knew the truth. The crowd didn’t see what He saw and didn’t know what He knew. The crowd was only responding to what was right in front of their face, and they took that as absolute truth.

The Two Realities

“We should base our lives on what God knows and not be limited by what little we know.”

There are two truths, two realities if you will, happening at the same time. There is the reality that the girl is dead. Then there is the reality that Jesus is saying she’s not dead, but only sleeping. So the reality according to what we know about the girl, and the reality according to what Jesus knows about the girl. Sometimes what we know and see and accept as truth isn’t always the only option. Or maybe there is something beyond what we see and here that is the real truth, a truth greater than the one right in front of us.

We should base our lives on what God knows and not be limited by what little we know. Sometimes we need to expand our beliefs and realize that maybe we know less than we think we do. Who’s to say there isn’t a whole other reality right there in front of us? “Oh, but you have to accept the facts. The girl is obviously dead. Our greatest experts on being dead have confirmed this, she is, in fact, dead. Accept it, and move on.” I wonder how many things we are missing out on because we just accept these so-called facts and move on.

We don’t always have to accept words as truth, even if they appear real, especially when they are in direct opposition to what God is saying. Don’t let any voice come and talk you out of something you know God has said. Don’t let it convince you it’s too late, no matter how real or factual it appears to be. Stick with what God is saying. People don’t always see the whole picture. Just because you don’t believe something is true doesn’t mean it’s not possible.

It’s Easier Just to Give In

We can be tempted to start responding to the weeping, the wailing, the report, the commotion. We hear Jesus, but there’s so much commotion, that it’s hard to remain in what he is saying. It’s hard not to be distracted by the opposing realities around us. Jairus could have said, “Oh well, just leave, we’ve been through enough. Let us mourn.” And that would have been it, his daughter would have truly been dead. Or instead, choose to stick with Jesus. Stick with what He is saying, His words, His truth, and kick out the other voices and commotion and believe.

” Stop settling for what you think is possible and move towards what God says is possible.”

You could be on your way somewhere with Jesus, believing for a miracle and so many voices keep coming up to you. “Oh, don’t bother anymore. It’s too late. Whatever you’ve been believing for, whatever you’ve been waiting for is not going to happen.” But Jesus is saying, “Don’t listen. It’s not so. Just keep walking with me and believe. Don’t listen to all the commotion, the wailing, the weeping, it’s just noise.” Stop settling for what you think is possible and move towards what God says is possible. How many things do we just accept because they are facts? How many times have you said or heard it said, “Well, that’s just the reality of it.” Well, maybe it is, but maybe another reality is greater.

Key Points From The Story of Jairus

  • The importance of faith is to believe beyond your present circumstances.
  • Don’t listen to the crowd. Surround yourself with the right voices.
  • Trust God and His word even when faced with contradictory facts or reports.
  • God’s truth may sometimes conflict with what appears to be true from a human perspective.

How to Believe Beyond Circumstances in Your Daily Life

  • Ignore the report and stick with what Jesus is saying.
  • Sometimes we need to move beyond our reality, expand our belief.
  • Stick with what God is saying, people don’t always see the whole picture.

Stick with God

Many times we have decided it’s too late. But God is saying “Don’t listen, you don’t know what I know. Your breakthrough isn’t dead, it’s still there, we just need to keep walking and believe.” The answer for Jairus’ daughter was simply to get rid of everything that was opposing the words Jesus was saying. Kick them out and make them leave. In your life, Jesus may be saying one thing, while circumstances shout another. Choose to stick with Jesus’ words even when faced with contradictory and opposing reports or discouraging facts. Choose to stick with what God knows about your situation. And just like Jairus’ daughter, the impossible will become possible for you.
