Being a Real Christian… it’s Not What You Think

Did you know…that being a Christian is NOT about being a good person, or living under a set of harsh rules. It’s not about being nice to others. It’s not even about taking care of the poor.  Being a Christian is simply about rearranging your life to accommodate God. 

It’s about making the effort to really know God, really experience Him, understand Him, and follow Him. It’s about letting go of you and grabbing hold of Him.   It’s about actually living a life that accurately reflects who God really is. 

Most people just try to be good and skip the whole relationship part with God. They skip letting God create in them something new.  So most Christians are just people full of lots of junk inside, trying to be good on the outside.  

So Much Self-Effort

It’s an exhausting, frustrating way to live, trying to be good without any real power to back you up.  So much self-effort.  We are constantly running around stuffing all the bad down in us, hoping it doesn’t surface or seep out for others to see. All while we try our best to be good and right and do all our “Christian” things.  This only produces mechanical, lifeless Christians who only give the appearance of godliness.

And How many people are just serving God because they think He demands all these rules and that we get them all right all the time?  That he requires us to act in certain ways or else.  

God doesn’t want you to struggle all day trying to be a good person, and then punish you when you get it wrong.  God wants to empower and enable you to live a life beyond what you thought was possible.  He wants to create in you something amazing so everyone can see how amazing He is.  He wants to transform you from the inside not just clean up your outside.

Real Transformation is Evident

When God is allowed to be God in us, we change.  It’s no longer about just trying to be a nicer, cleaner, well-mannered person. You actually, really change. Your life starts to be transformed.  Clear evidence of a real Christian is a life truly transformed, and that transformation is evident to all those around.   As a result, you probably will become a nicer person, you might care about the poor and want to do good. But it will be a genuine feeling that flows out of a truly changed life, out of a heart for God, no longer just self-effort. 

So be honest with yourself. Are you just getting up every day trying your best to do good?  Trying to live a clean moral life?  Or is there real evidence of the transforming life of God in you?  If not do something about it now.  Turn your heart and your focus toward God.  Open up to Him become vulnerable and let God be God and do what only He can do.  

The world is full of people just trying to be a good Christian. Isn’t it time for the world to see truly empowered and transformed lives instead?
